COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls Athletic Staff has named Damain Benefield, freshman baseball player, as the Renasant Bank Athlete of the Month for the month of April 2018.
The Ranburne, Ala. native is in his first year as a member of The W baseball team and has really stepped up to lead the Owls offensively. Because of his effort, the starting infielder was recently named the United States Collegiate Athletic Association Baseball Player of the Week.
As the Owls power hitter, Benefield tops his team in almost every offensive category toting a .435 batting average, a .544 on base percentage, and a .790 slugging percentage. Appearing in 21 games, he has recorded 62 at-bats, 19 runs, and 27 hits (seven doubles and five homeruns) for 25 RBI.
Against Selma University in Selma, Ala., Benefield played his best game of the season on Saturday, March 31. In the second game of the doubleheader, he dropped two homeruns on three at-bats for four RBIs and two runs to help his team in the 11-9 victory.
Benefield is the son of Daniel and Lyn Benefield and the brother of Tristen Benefield. He enjoys Mexican food, the movie "Walking Tall", and the song "Wanted Dead or Alive".
Off the field, Benefield is studying physical therapy while minoring in exercise science.
You can catch Benefield and the rest of the Owls baseball team when they travel to Tougaloo, Miss. on Saturday, April 7 to take on the Tougaloo College Bulldogs. The first pitch is set for 1 p.m.
