COLUMBUS, Miss. – Each month the Owls Athletic staff chooses one player to highlight as the Renasant Player of the Month because of their actions on the field, in the classroom, and in the community. This month, the Owls Athletic Department has chosen junior softball player Heidi Matthews.
The Coward, S.C. native is in her first year as a member of The W softball team. So far this season, Matthews has played and started in all 14 games to lead the team with a .356 batting average. With 45 at-bats, Matthews has tallied 15 runs, 16 hits (two doubles), 7 RBIs, and 7 stolen bases. She stouts a .442 on base percentage and a .400 slugging percentage.
In her first semester enrolled at the Mississippi University for Women, Matthews maintained a 3.2 GPA and participated in several community service projects. She and other teammates helped with Challenger Baseball, the City of Columbus Haunted House, and put in several hours at the Child and Parent Development Center. She won the Intramural Breast Cancer Awareness 5K and is a member of The W Chapter of Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
