CONWAY, Ark. – The Mississippi University for Women men's soccer team had a successful rematch against Hendrix College. The Owls came out of the gate strong to defeat the Warriors 4-3 on Tuesday, Oct. 3 at Hendrix's Warrior Field.
Tuesday's match was the second time the two teams met during the 2017 season and after dropping the first match 1-0, the Owls stepped away from the second matchup victorious.
Hendrix (3-9) grabbed an early goal just 36 seconds in to the game for a 1-0 lead. The Owls worked their way down the field and just 12 minutes later, Paxton Bounds scored his second goal of the season to put the match at 1-1.
With the first goal out of the way, the Owls went on a scoring streak for three goals total in the first half. Bounds scored a second goal at the 20-minute mark with an assist from Yusha Pattonbey and Josh Martin score and unassisted goal with five minutes left in the half.
In the second half, the Warriors worked to close the scoring gap with a goal off a penalty kick three minutes into the half.
The Owls Jacob Johnson, assisted by Jonathan Lopez, scored the deciding goal at 59:39 but the Warriors continued to battled. With just nine minutes left in the game, an unassisted goal for Hendrix placed the final score at 4-3.
Paxton Bounds was almost perfect on the field, tallying two shots, both resulting in goals.
John McGee, freshman goalkeeper, put in the entire 90 minutes in front of the goal to record three saves with three goals allowed.
The Owls men's soccer team will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 6 when the travel to The Crown College of the Bible. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m. EST.
