COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls men's soccer team end the 2017 season on high note with a 5-1 victory over Oakwood University on Sunday, Oct. 29. Senior Jacob Johnson contributed 2 goals during Sunday's match in his last game as a member of The W soccer team.
Five minutes later, Johnson, assisted by Paxton Bounds, scored his first goal of the game to put The W head of Oakwood 2-0.
Martin, assisted by Lopez, landed the Owls third goal of the match at the 18-minute mark for a 3-0 early lead.
Ten minutes later, the Ambassadors came full force at the Owls to score their first and only goal of the match to cut The W lead to 3-1.
Will Jones, a junior from Caledonia, Miss., scored the Owls last goal of the first half to allow The W to enter the half ahead of Oakwood 4-1.
In the second half, both teams played well defensively to close scoring opportunities on both sides of the field.
With 15 minutes left in the game, Johnson scored his second goal of the match off a penalty kick to end the scoring effort for a final score of 5-1.
During his senior day, Johnson led the Owls offensively with 6 shots, 3 on goal, and 2 goals scored. Lopez also did well on offense to contribute 3 shots, 2 on goal, 1 goal scored, and 1 assist.
Selvin Lopez, freshman keeper, spent the entire 90 minutes in front of the goal to collect 7 saves and 1 goal allowed.
The Owls close the 2017 season with a record of 4-10-2 with big wins over Oakwood, Hendrix, and The Crown College. The W will continue to improve and look expand on this season's successes in 2018.
