COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls softball team split the day with Stillman College, picking up game one 6-4 and dropping game two 5-2. The W moves to 18-16 on the season as the near the last games of the regular season.
GAME ONE (6-4)
The Owls defense held strong against the Stillman batters. Despite being outhit 9-8, The W covered the field and prevented Tiger runs in crucial moments of the game. The Owls fielders also went errorless in the outing stopping any unearned runs.
The Owls started the scoring effort in the bottom of the second with two runs. Carolyn "Kendall" Wilkinson was credited with the first RBI of the game with a sacrifice fly that allowed Anna Lloyd to make it across home plate. Owls catcher Brianna Duquette collected the second RBI of the game with a single up the middle to send Heidi Matthews home for the Owls 2-0 lead.
The W continued its scoring effort in the bottom of the third with four additional runs. Wilkinson collected two RBIs on a fielder's choice that allowed Katlyn Duke and Lloyd to score and Bailey Johnston doubled to left field to push Kristen Martin and Wilkinson home.
The Owls defense was able to keep Stillman off the board for the first half of the game but the Tigers would finally score their first run in the top of the fourth, cutting the Owls lead to 6-1.
Stillman continued to fight and was able to put up two runs in the sixth and one run in the seventh but it was not enough take the game back from the Owls. The W claimed the victory, 6-4.
Junior pitcher Madison Scoggin threw a complete game for her seventh win of the season. The Bay Springs, Miss. native recorded one strikeout, no walks, four runs, and nine hits against during her time on the mound.
At the plate, Duke led her team in hits on a 2-for-2 appearance with one run while Wilkinson recorded a game high of three RBIs with one run.
Other standout Owls were Johnston with two RBIs and Lloyd, scoring two runs.
GAME TWO (5-2)
Game two started off slowly for both team with Stillman scoring the first run of the game in the third.
Stillman tied the game with a single run in the sixth but was able to take the victory in the top of the seventh with three runs.
Tiffany Phillips, sophomore pitcher, pitched 6.1 innings for the loss on the mound. The Greenville, Miss. native allowed 10 hits against for five runs (four earned) with three walks.
Ciara Steward entered the game in the seventh to pitched 0.2 innings for one hit against and one walk.
At the plate, Katlyn Duke again led her team in hits with a 2-for-4 appearance with one run.
The Owls will host Judson College on Wednesday, April 11 at 3 p.m. Come out and support The W softball team as they look the close the season with a doubleheader victory over the Eagles.
