COLUMBUS, Miss. – After a disappointing weekend at home, the Mississippi University for Women volleyball team looks to bounce back at the Wallace State Volleyball tournament on Friday, Oct. 13 – Saturday, Oct. 14. During the two-day tournament, the Owls (5-14) will face Faulkner State Community College, Vincennes University, Catawba Valley Community College, and the host school Wallace State Community College.
Despite not picking up a win at the home tri-match, the Owls defense did well against Loyola University-New Orleans and Fisk University. At the net, Tori Weir, Mary Grace Prine, and Macey Presley got off some good blocks to record points for The Owls.
On the season, Kayla King leads the Owls offense with 89 kills on 310 total attacks over 19 matches and 53 sets played. The freshman outside hitter has also collected 11 service aces, 55 digs, one solo block, and seven block assist for 104.5 points.
Trailing King in offensive but leading the Owls defensively, Loren Schmitt has recorded 107.5 points for the Owls with 69 kills on 278 total attacks, 36 service aces, 114 digs, and five block assists. The Mt. Juliet, Tenn. native has been an important piece to the Owls on both sides of the ball and has been known to play all positions.
Setting duties are usually taken up by Madison Lamon. So far this season, the Russellville, Ala. native has tallied 156 assists in 16 matches for 49 sets. When Lamon was out due to injury, Allyson Murff stepped in for two weeks to record 113 assists in 16 matches for 33 sets.
The Owls first match at the tournament will be Friday at 4 p.m. against Faulkner State. The W will be competing against two-year athletic programs so the matches will be counted as exhibition.
