COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Mississippi University for Women's volleyball team will close out the 2017 season Saturday, Nov. 4 when they host Judson College and Martin Methodist College in a three game tri-match. The Owls enter the matches 5-20 on the season and look to end it with back-to-back wins at home in Emma "Ody" Pohl Gymnasium.
The new team has overcome some major obstacles in its comeback season, facing stiff odds against more experienced teams. The Owls have continued to work hard and battle in each set to land wins against opponents like Southwestern Adventist University, Rust College, Hiwassee College, and Judson.
Having face both teams earlier in the season, The W will play these matches with awareness that it lacked in previous matches. Against Martin Methodist, the Owls were unable to defeat the Redhawks on their home court, falling 3-0 in a match decided by unforced errors. Versus Judson College, the Owls played their first 5 set match of the season to come from behind 6-1 to take the final set and the match.
Loren Schmitt, freshman utility player, leads the Owls in points with 133.5. Schmitt has played in all 24 matches for 75 sets to tally 91 kills on 377 total attacks, 40 service aces, 152 digs, and 5 block assists. The Mt. Juliet, Tenn. native also leads The W in service aces and digs.
At the net, Tori Weir had done a great job as a first year middle blocker and right side hitter. The Columbus, Miss. native has also played in all 24 matches for 78 sets to record 84 kills on 322 total attacks, and 12 digs. She leads the team in blocks with 29 solo blocks and 23 blocks assists for 52 total.
The Owls will take on Martin Methodist in the first match of the tri-match at noon. Come out and support the Owls as the look to close the 2017 season.
