COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Owls volleyball team will return to action this weekend when they travel to Montgomery, Ala. to participate in the 2018 Huntingdon Volleyball Tournament. Beginning on Friday, Sept. 7 – Saturday, Sept. 8, the Owls will face Huntingdon College, Agnes Scott College, Tuskegee University, and North Carolina Wesleyan College.
Entering the tournament 0-4, the Owls are looking for their first win of the season. Led by sophomore middle blocker/right side hitter Tori Weir, The W offense steadily improved over the first four matches. Commanding control of the first row, Weir currently holds a team high of 18 kills, five total blocks, and 21.0 points.
Also in the Owls starting six is junior defensive specialist and USCAA Volleyball Player of the Week Courtney Poole and sophomore outside hitter and USCAA Setter of the Week Mary Grace Prine. Poole ranks second on the team in digs with 16 while Prine stepped in at setter to rank second on the team in assist with 27. Prine also ties Weir with four block assists.
"I believe we will be at an advantage having played Tuskegee once in the preseason," said Head Coach Roxanne Hernandez. "We know we can expect them to battle and we have to be ready to capitalize on our opportunities to put the ball away. Having played Huntingdon and Agnes Scott last year, the returners know that we can be successful against both of these teams. We have spoken a lot and worked on application of drills in game like situations and having mental toughness, which I think is going to be a continued work in progress for us as we go into the weekend.
The Owls will begin the tournament against Huntingdon on Friday at 10 a.m. Come out and support The W volleyball team or monitor the progress on its social media pages.
