Softball Finishes Sixth in SCWS

Going into the second round of the Small College World Series, MUW Softball faced Saint Mary of the Woods College, who came into the conference as the third seed. After losing to SMWC, MUW went into the redemption round, facing off against D'Youville College. Unfortunately, they were unable to hold off the Saints offense, ending their chances at the SCWS Championship and finishing sixth overall in the tournament. Owls softball finish their 2020-21 season with a 17-14 record.

MUW vs Saint Mary of the Woods College (L, 9-6)

While Saint Mary got on board quickly, with two runs in the top of the first inning, pitcher Kaitlynn Parrish was able to hold them off until she was relieved in the circle by Mackenzie Denton in the top of the 6th. Parrish pitched for 5 innings, allowing 4 runs on 5 hits with 4 strikeouts and 1 walk. Denton, coming in as relief in the top of the 6th, allowed 5 runs on 5 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.

In the batter's box, Iyana Canada went 2 for 4 with a double and a triple, as well as an RBI. Madison Crosby also collected a triple in the outing. Lauren Duckworth went 2 for 3 at the plate, with an RBI and a stolen base.  Hannah Hurdle went yard, blasting a solo home run in the sixth inning, bringing the Owls within one. While the Owls battled down to their last out, they could not answer Saint Mary's big 6th inning, falling short 9-6.

MUW vs D'Youville College (L, 6-3)

In their redemption game, it was a lower-scoring affair, with MUW scoring once in the 2nd and 3rd innings. Ultimately, the Saints responded with 3 runs in the top of the 4th and 2 runs in the top of the 5th.

Offensively, the Owls struck first off of an RBI double by Hannah Hurdle, scoring Jessica Deming. Their run in the top of the third came off of an RBI single by Megan Cummins, scoring Lauren Duckworth. The last Owls run came by an RBI single by Austyn Holden, scoring Iyana Canada.

In the pitcher's circle, Mackenzie Denton saw another full seven innings of work for the Owls. Denton faced 31 batters, allowed 6 runs on 8 hits, but still managed to strike out 10 of the Saint's batters.

While the Owls are finished with this season, they have nothing to be ashamed of. Their hard work carried them far, and they have been excellent representatives for our university. To the seniors, thank you for your time and effort. Thank you for representing your school and your team so well during your time here. Welcome to the Long Blue Line! Go Owls.
