Owls close 2021-22 with a loss at Piedmont

Box Score DEMOREST, Ga. -   Mississippi University for Women men's basketball closed the books on 2021-22 with a road loss at Piedmont University, in a game which was added to the schedule late. The Owls were defeated, 95-42, by the Lions at Cave Arena.

"I give our guys a lot of credit in finding out a few days ago that we were going to go and play a very good club who does things differently than what we've seen at any point all season long and having one day of practice to prepare," The W Head Coach Dean Burrows said. "Piedmont is a very good program.

"We try and teach life by using this game and - in life - effort is between 'you & you' each and every day that we are given. Our effort was not there for an overwhelming majority of the evening. 25 turnovers won't give any team an opportunity to be successful at any level. With that said, I felt at times, we saw some good things as far as effort from a few guys. What was most rewarding for myself personally speaking was having a few of their fans and administrators come and tell us how much class our program showed and at the end of the day, that will mean the most going forward as we work to continue to build."

The teams matched each other for the first 14 minutes. When Ddallen Bailey made a layup with 6:11 left in the opening segment, it drew The W to within four points, 27-23.

But a not-so-funny thing happened to the Owls at that juncture:  they did not score the rest of the half.

In a perfect storm of MUW misfortune, Piedmont got red hot down the first half stretch. That fact, combined with nine turnovers in that six-minute span by MUW, resulted in a 26-0 run by the Lions heading into the intermission and a 53-23 cushion.

Bailey, playing his final game for The W, led his team with 11 points and nine rebounds. He also had four steals, two assists and a blocked shot on his ledger for his career capper. Burrows said: "Not once did we ever have to question Ddallen's work ethic and that screams volumes about who he is as a young man and will serve him throughout the rest of his life."

Terry Coleman Jr. added 10 points and four boards, as the only other Owl in double-digit scoring. Quintiyus Causey was 3-for-3 from beyond the arc in the first five minutes of the game, only to be shut out by the Lions the rest of the way and finishing with nine points.

Thomas Wright had seven points and seven rebounds. Shon Wright chipped in three points and Dariun Doss two, rounding out the MUW point total.
