Owls Tennis gets split result in home opener

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Mississippi University for Women tennis teams played their first official home matches of 2022-23 versus Huntingdon College, with mixed results. The Owls' women's team defeated the Hawks, 5-4, while The W men fell by a 9-0 score.
 
For The W ladies, the team battled strong up and down the lineup versus Huntingdon. The key wins to put MUW over the top for the win came at Nos. 3 and 4 singles. At No. 3, MUWs Macie Monasco earned her first collegiate singles win by defeating Katelyn Morris of HC, 6-2, 7-76 (7-5).
 
Magee Etheridge and Mallory Parker of the Hawks split sets, 6-4 and 4-6 to open, before Etheridge won the proset third, 10-4. Etheridge improved to 2-1 in singles on the year.
 
"I'm really pleased with how our newcomers are stepping into the starting roles on this team," The W Head Coach Daniel Talley said. "Macie  Manasco and Maggie Etheridge have both jumped in and are competing so well for us."
 
On the men's side, Sam Yarborough and Lucas Suggs lost, 8-2, in second doubles, after Nos. 1 and 3 pairs were blanked, 8-0.
 
Huntingdon won all six singles matches in straight sets. At No. 2, Yarborough was topped 6-1, 6-3. Suggs fell at No. 4 singles, 6-3, 6-2.
 
 "I'm really happy with how my guys played today," Talley added. "Every court played very hard. We just came up against a good team, but on every court we made them make good shots."
