COLUMBUS, Miss. – Junior post player
Thomas Wright had a field day – literally – as he led the Mississippi University for Women to a 77-59 win at home over Toccoa Falls College. The 18-point margin by the Owls (7-6) over the Screaming Eagles (4-5) is the team's largest point span in any of its wins, thus far, in 2022-23.
And a big reason for The W's wire-to-wire victory was the efforts of junior post player
Thomas Wright. Wright levied his second double-double of the season – posting game-high totals of 27 points and 13 rebounds – and notched his 13th-consecutive double-digit scoring game in as many outings in 2022-23, as well.
Wright even flirted with a triple-double, dishing off six assists. He connected on a sterling 12-of-16 from the field.
Three other Owls –
Quintiyus Causey,
Shon Wright (no relation to Thomas) and
Andrew Shepherd – all scored in double figures in the win. Causey and
Shon Wright each tallied 13 points, with Shepherd adding 12. Shepherd was 4-of-7 from long range, as MUW drained 10 treys as a team.
Wright had eight rebounds and a block, while Shepherd dished off four assists.
The Owls parlayed their 45-31 rebounding advantage into 14 second-chance points (compared to just two by TFC).
These same two teams will collide again on Tuesday (Jan. 10/6 p.m. CT), with the venue switching to Toccoa Falls, Georgia, for the rematch.
