Owls softball swept by Rhodes

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women's softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at home versus Rhodes College. The Owls (1-3) fell by scores of 5-3 and 4-1 to the Lynx (4-4) at Don Usher Field.

In the day's opener, The W was limited to just two hits. The Owls' offense was a first-inning RBI single off the bat of sophomore All-American Rylie Grisham (1-3). That was followed by a pair of unearned runs in the second after a Lynx error in the outfield.

MUW's only other hit was a double off the bat of Jaelyn Palmer.

Jade Rushing took the loss in the circle, going 5.1 innings. Rushing was charged with four earned runs. Reliever Aery Byerley went 1.2 innings and gave up a run. Rushing and Byerley each had a pair of strikeouts.

In the second contest, the Owls plated their only run of th game in the bottom of the first. Down 1-0, MUW's Jessica Deming drew a leadoff walk and took second on a ground out. Riley Phillips then tripled to drive home Deming.

Two Lynx runs in the fourth and another in the seventh sealed The W's fate. Phillips was 2-for-3 and had both MUW hits in the game.

Pitcher Bailey McClellan went the complete game for the Owls, but was victimized by six MUW errors. McClellan only gave up a single earned run and struck out three, while not issuing a walk.

The teams will play the third game of the series on Sunday at 12 p.m. at Don Usher Field.
