Owls clawed by Tigers in doubleheader loss

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -  Mississippi University for Women softball dropped its second-consecutive doubleheader, falling at Stillman College, 7-3 and 10-2 in five innings. The Owls fell to 14-10, while the NAIA-member Tigers improved to 22-8

In game one, the Owls got off to a good start, holding a 3-1 lead through 4 ½ innings. In the first, Rylie Grisham's RBI single plated Madison Crosby. Riley Phillips also scored on a fielding error by the catcher to make it 2-0.

The Tigers got one back in their half of the first. In the top of them, a sacrifice fly by Ashton Farnell brought home Maiya Joe with The W's third run.

But in the bottom of the fourth frame, Stillman got another run to trail the Owls, 3-2. A three-spot in the fifth and two more in the sixth thwarted The W's hopes.

In addition to Grisham and Crosby, Joe and Farnell also had hits – both doubles – to account for the Owls' four-hit total in the game. Stillman had 11 total hits.

In the circle, the sophomore Grisham (6-3) took the loss. In 5.1 innings, she gave up 10 hits and seven runs, five earned.

Game two had a similar feel, as the Owls scored twice in the first inning, but would cross the plate no more in the game. The W's runs came on a ground-out RBI by Crosby and an RBI single via Grisham's  bat.

Meanwhile, the strong Tigers' team scored in every at-bat.

Stillman knotted the game with two in the second, and then built a lead with two in the second, one in the third, three in the, fourth and two in the fifth to end the game on the run rule.

Phillips and Jaelynn Palmer had the other two hits by MUW. The Tigers collected 14 hits versus a trio of Owls' pitchers. Bailey McClellan (4-3) took the loss.

After a few days off, the Owls and Tigers will meet again – this time in Columbus – for a twinbill next Tuesday (April 4) at Don Usher Field.
