Owls softball extends win streak to 6

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women softball pushed its current win skein to six games on Tuesday, after sweeping a doubleheader from Millsaps College at Don Usher Field. The Owls (7-3) defeated the majors (6-8) by scores of 7-2 and 6-4.

"I was really proud of us, offensively," MUW Head Coach Buddy Foster said. "That's the team I saw in the fall. I'm not sure exactly how many two-out hits we had, but we had several. When those things are happening – with our pitching and our defense – we have the potential to be pretty good. I was really proud of how we came out and competed against a pretty decent team.

"We threw the ball well. With our defense, if we keep the ball down, our infield is pretty 'salty.' We talk about just throw into contact and let our defense work."

In game one, the Owls built a 7-0 lead before the Majors were able to muster a run off of Rylie Grisham (2-1). Only one of the runs off Grisham was earned, the first earned run she has given up in 25.2 innings of work (good for a miniscule (0.27 ERA). It was her third complete game of the young season.

Junior center-fielder Maddy Suggs – from Caledonia High School – went 2-for-3 and scored twice in the No. 9 slot of the order. Grisham was 2-for-3 with the bat, also producing an RBI. Madison Crosby also collected two hits (2-4), scored once and drove in a run.

Crosby and catcher Emilee Slade each had a double.

In game two, starting pitcher Bailey McClellan went 5.0 innings and permitting two runs in the third was her only hiccup in earning her first win at The W.

The two runs never really hurt McClellan, as her Owl teammates posted six runs for her to work with before giving way to Avery Byerley for the final two innings of a non-save situation.

MUW put three runs on the board in its first at-bats of the game. Riley Phillips had an RBI triple that plated Jessica Deming. Grisham then laced a single that brought in Phillips. Alysa Newman would also double home Madison Crosby to make it 3-0 in the first.

Deming – batting leadoff – had a big game for The W. Deming went 3-for-3 with a double and two RBI. She also stole two more bases, making her a perfect 12-for-12 in thefts this season.

Newman finished the game hitting 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two runs batted in.
