Game Recap: Softball |

It’s a tough day at the office for Owls Softball versus Maryville

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women's softball team found the going tough in its home doubleheader versus Maryville College. The Owls (14-16) fell to the Scots (18-11) by scores of 10-0 and 9-6, at Don Usher Field.

In game one, MUW trailed, 1-0, through four innings after the Maryville plated a first-inning run without the benefit of a hit. MUW's Rylie Grisham (6-6) – through those first four frames – permitted just a second-inning single.

But in the fourth, the Scots got to Grisham for a pair of triples and a single - all of whom would eventually score – to make it 4-0. Avery Byerley, who came on in relief in the fifth, was roughed up for six runs in the sixth and a 10-0 MC lead.

With The W held to just two hits – a single by Jaelynn Palmer (1-2) and a double off the bat of Alysa Newman (1-3) – the game was ended by the run-rule after the sixth.

In game two, one bad inning by the Owls proved to be the difference. After single runs in the first and second, MC plated six runs in the third. Maryville was then held scoreless until a single run in the seventh.

Meanwhile, The W's offense was more active in the second game, banging out eight hits. Palmer's (1-4) bases-loaded, two-run single in the second evened the game at 2-2. Palmer also had a fielder's choice RBI in the sixth and a bases-loaded walk in the seventh to give her a four-RBI game.

Anna Sandlin (1-3) and Maiya Joe (1-3) each had RBI singles in the fifth inning, as well, helping to erase the Owls' deficit.

Leadoff hitter Jessica Deming went 2-for-4 with a triple and Ashton Farnell was 2-for-3, as the only Owls with multiple hits. Farnell scored twice and Deming, once. Each also walk once.

In all, The W drew nine bases-on-balls for the game. Palmer and Newman each had two free passes.

Jade Rushing (3-3) went 2.1 innings in taking the loss. Rushing permitted seven hits and eight runs, seven earned.
