Box Score 2 MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Mississippi University for Women's tennis teams officially opened the 2023-24 season, both losing to non-conference foe Huntingdon College. The Owls' women's team fell to the Hawks, 5-4, and the men lost, 9-0.
In the women's contest, Huntingdon took a 2-1 lead after doubles.
Jaysa Whatley (Tuscaloosa, Ala.) and
Maggie Taylor (Columbus, Miss.) earned the Owls' team point at the No. 3 position.
In singles play, The W dropped the Nos. 1 and 2 matches as
Maggie Etheridge (Lyon, Miss.) and
Karen Calzadilla (Forest, Miss.) lost, respectively. Etheridge fell to the Hawks' Taji Williams in a grueling three-set match. Williams took set one 7-6 (7-4) and Etheridge dominated set two, 6-1, before falling 10-5 in the deciding third set.
At third singles, senior
Sarah Kackley (Brandon, Miss.) won in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0.
Mallory Parker (Mantachie, Miss.) was defeated in fourth singles, 6-0, 6-1. Whatley was a 6-1, 6-3 winner at No. 5 singles and Taylor won by forfeit at No. 6 singles.
The W men were blanked in doubles action, trailing 3-0 heading into singles. HC would win all six singles bouts in straight sets.
At first singles,
Lucas Suggs (Caledonia, Miss.) lost 6-3, 6-0, followed by
Kaleb Webster (Northport, Ala.) at No. 2, 6-0, 6-0.
Adrian Barber (Riverdale, Ga.), 6-4, 6-1, and
Jasper Poag (Columbus, Miss.), 6-0, 6-1, went down to defeat at Nos. 3 and 4 singles.
Weston Petty (Atlanta, Ga.) was topped at No. 5 singles (6-0, 6-0) and
Tyler Bailey (Fosters, Ala.) lost at sixth singles (6-1, 6-2) to round out the lineup.
