Owls compete at Samford Open

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.- Mississippi University for Women Track and Field teams participated in the Samford Open on Saturday at the Crossplex. The Owls' women's team set four school records during the competition.

Three of the new standards were by individuals lowering their own previous records on the indoor season.

Only freshman Ty'Kerria Young was able to snatch someone else's record and that occurred in the long jump. Young had her best mark of 4.75 meters. That eclipsed the 4.47-meter mark of Kaitlyn McRee, set during the 2022 campaign.

Young was also able to extend her own MUW record in the triple jump. Young went 10.31 meters, which surpassed her 10.29m jump just last week at the same facility.

In the women's mile, Kalee Sanders' previous record time was also set just last week. In Saturday's Samford Open, Sanders was clocked at her new best time of 6:47.66 minutes.

Last weekend, freshman thrower Arie'Onna McCollum began her college career with a record in the shot put (9.42m). This Saturday, McCollum extended that distance to 9.50 meters at the Open. She also holds the women's weight throw record, set on Jan. 13, as well.
