Owls Softball picks up two wins on Day 2 of MUW Invitational

COLUMBUS, Miss. – Mississippi University for Women softball plowed through its pair of games on Day 2 of its MUW Invitational on Saturday. The Owls (3-1) run-ruled Sewanee, 13-2, and dominated Millsaps College, 8-1, in the nightcap.

The tourney concludes on Sunday, with The W facing Franklin College (1 p.m.) and Millsaps (3 p.m.).

The win over Sewanee on Saturday avenged a Friday night loss to the Tigers, 2-1. In the rematch, the Owls out-hit Sewanee by a 13-2 margin, led by Riley Phillips' 3-for-4 night. Phillips scored three runs and drove in another, thanks to her third inning triple that plated Emilee Slade.

For her part, Slade was 2-for-2 with three runs and an RBI double. Maiya Joe was 1-for-2 with two runs. Joe had five runs batted in, thanks largely to her second inning three-run homer.

Lilly Harrison went 2-for-3 with a run, as MUW's other player with a multi-hit game.

In the circle, Bailey McClellan (1-0) went 5.0 innings for the complete-game victory. McClellan allowed just one earned run, striking out two Tigers and walking none.

Versus regional-rival Millsaps, The W jumped out to a 5-0 lead after two and never looked back. The Owls held a 12-7 advantage in hits versus the Majors.

Freshman Baylee McWilliams (1-1), who took the tough loss on Friday, was dominating versus Millsaps, allowing just one run and striking out four (with one walk) in the complete-game win.

Phillips was the catalyst once again at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a double and triple. Phillips drove in one and scored three times.

Teammate Alysa Newman was also 3-for-4, with four RBI and a double on her ledger. McWilliams also helped her team at the plate, going 2-for-4.
