ATLANTA, Ga. – Thrower Arie'Onna McCollum (Winfield, Ala.) continues to take Mississippi University for Women field events to new heights – make that distances – in her first season with the squad. At Saturday's Clark Atlanta University Panther Invitational, it was no exception for the freshman as McCollum set school records in both the women's discus and shot put.
 
McCollum's efforts were a part of four new MUW standards set by the Owls' teams at the CAU meet.
 
In the women's discus, McCollum erased one of the oldest records still on the books for MUW's relatively-new program by besting the 2020 mark (29.44m) of Jalyn Coleman. McCollum uncorked a throw of 29.76 meters and placed 15th, overall, in the deep field of competitors.
 
Then, in the women's shot put, McCollum bettered one of the school's more recent records: her own standard set just last weekend. McCollum's heave of 9.84 meters at Clark Atlanta extended her own record of 9.60 meters, set at the Mississippi College outdoor opener last Saturday, to place 12th in the event.
 
Owls men's track and field also gained two new at the CAU meet. Sophomore Jourden Whitfield (Sulligent, Ala.) bested his previous school record in the javelin toss, with a throw of 40.23 meters (bettering his 2023 mark of 40.20m). Whitfield's effort earned him an eighth place, overall, in the final men's javelin results.
 
In the men's 400-meter hurdles, super frosh Sinaj Lynn (Headland, Ala.) put his name in the MUW record book just by being the first-ever competitor from The W, in its brief program history, to attempt the race. Lynn was clocked at a 1:04.37 minutes time, to place 20th.
