Box Score 2 LaGRANGE, Ga. – Mississippi University for Women tennis got a mixed result at LaGrange College on Saturday. The Owls women (3-9) earned a 5-4 win despite being shorthanded, while the men (2-12) fell by a 9-0 score to the Panthers.
With just four women available to head coach
Daniel Talley, MUW had little room for error, conceding three points (one at doubles and two for singles) to LaGrange before the match even started. But The W ladies came through, winning both the No. 1 doubles (8-3), with
Macie Manasco and
Jaysa Whatley, and the No. 2 doubles (8-4), with
Davianna Brent and
Alexis Woods, to grab a 2-1 lead in the team score after pairs play.
The Panthers picked up their fourth point at No. 1 singles, but MUW would sweep the Nos. 2-4 matches for the 5-4 margin. At No. 2 singles, Whatley dominated by a 6-0, 6-0 score. At No. 4, Woods also won in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2.
The deciding match came at third singles where Brent staged the match-winning comeback victory. After dropping the opening set 6-0, Brent won a hard-fought 7-6 decision in set two. She then rolled to a 6-2 win in the deciding third set.
The MUW men found themselves down 3-0 after doubles, before falling in straight sets in the Nos. 1-5 singles bouts. The Owls'
Weston Petty had an injury default at No. 6 singles.
Lucas Suggs, playing third singles, lost 6-2, 6-4, and
Adrian Barber – at No. 5 singles – dropped a tough 6-4, 6-3 decision.
