GREENVILLE, Ill. – Mississippi University for Women softball dropped a pair of heartbreaking St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) games at Greenville University, by identical 3-2 scores. In both cases, the Owls (16-10, 2-2 SLIAC) saw the Panthers (19-5, 2-2 SLIAC) score the winning runs late in the game.
In game one of the day,
Alysa Newman (1-2) drove in both of MUW's runs. Newman had an RBI single in the first to make it 1-0. She then lifted a second inning sacrifice fly to make it 2-0. Newman drove in
Jessica Deming in both cases and both runs were unearned, due to GU miscues.
Greenville got a run back in the third, but The W pitcher
Rylie Grisham kept the Panthers at bay through six innings. But in the seventh, Grisham gave up a leadoff single, followed by a triple to knot the game at 2-2.
Baylee McClellan was summoned to the circle in an effort to keep the game in check and try to force extra innings. McClellan retired the first batter she faced on a ground out. However, No. 9 batter Jamey Johnson singled to center to easily plate the winning run in walk-off fashion.
Grisham (5-2) went 6.0 innings and permitted five hits and three runs (two earned). She struck out three and walked two.
Game two was eerily similar in that the Owls were nursing a 2-1 lead after three innings. This time MUW's runs came off the bat of
Maiya Joe with a crushing solo home run in the second inning to tie the game at 1-1. In the third, another Newman sacrifice fly plated
Emilee Slade with the go-ahead run.
Greenville produced an unearned run in the fifth that knotted the game at 2-2. Then, in the home half of the sixth, an RBI single to right by Johnson pushed across what would be the deciding run.
Deming (2-3),
Kaitlyn Bearley (2-3), and Joe (2-3) had multi-hit games for The W.
Avery Byerley (2-3) went the distance in taking the loss for the Owls. Byerley struck out five and walked just one Panther.
