Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 LaGRANGE, Ga. – The W tennis teams lost their season-opening matches – both non-conference bouts - at LaGrange College. The Owls women's team fell by a tight 4-3 score, while the men were blanked, 7-0.
The MUW women started down a point after dropping two-of-three doubles matches. The Owls' No. 1 tandem of
Jaysa Whatley and
Emma Horton were 6-1 victors, before the Panthers won the other two doubles matches.
In singles, MUW won the Nos. 2-4 matches, with LaGrange taking the Nos. 1, 5, and 6 contests to provide the difference.
Horton, a junior transfer, and fellow newcomer
Alaina Mathis, a feshman, both notched their first singles wins for The W, playing at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively. Horton steamrolled the Panthers' Reese Moat, 6-1, 6-1. Mathis had to work a bit harder versus Alex Fuller, but still got the straight-set win, 6-3, 7-5.
Those wins sandwiched another straight-set victory by junior – and former Columbus Christian Academy player –
Audrey Foreman at No. 4 singles, 6-1, 7-6.
The W men found the going tough versus a talented LaGrange lineup. After getting swept in doubles, former New Hope High School player
Jasper Poag was the lone Owl to even manage to win a set in singles.
Poag, a senior, lost to the Panthers' Nic Booth by a score of 3-6, 2-6 at the No. 3 position.
