Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Owls ring up win over Belhaven, 89-79

COLUMBUS, Miss. - Behind Tray Huguley's first double-double with the program, The W men's basketball team defeated regional rival Belhaven University, 89-79, in a non-conference bout at Pohl Gym. The Owls improved to 2-4 on the season, while the Blazers slipped to 2-5.

Huguley led a cast of no less than six MUW players in double-digit scoring for the game. Huguley, a sophomore from Saks, Alabama, poured in game-high totals with 22 points and 14 rebounds. He shot a deft 10-for-15 from the field and 10 of his rebounds were on the defensive end.

Huguley also had two blocked shots and three assists on his ledger in the victory.

Junior transfer Tyler Shephard added 13 points and Joe Haze Austin had 12 points, going 4-of-8 and 4-of-7 from the floor, respectively. Shephard also grabbed four rebounds, while Austin had a pair of blocks to his credit. Each had two steals, as well.

A trio of Owls – Devin McCaine, Jackson Reid, and Mal Stansfield – each booked 10 points. Reid, who was 4-for-8 shooting, also had a game-leading six assists to go along with his four rebounds and two steals.

Stransfield was a perfect 4-of-4 from the field and also dished off for three assists.

Trent Walker narrowly missed the double-digit parade, but still cobbled together a nice effort. Walker had nine points, eight rebounds (all defensive), and five assists.

As a team, the Owls shot impressive totals from all three areas. MUW went 35-of-59 from the field for a clip of 59 percent, hit 50 percent (7-14) from beyond the arc, and converted 12-of-16 free throws (75 percent) for the game.

The W will return to SLIAC play on Thursday (Dec. 4/7:30 p.m.) when it plays host to Spalding University at Pohl Gym.
