COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W softball had mixed results on the first day of The W Invitational, topping Covenant College, 3-1, and losing to Millsaps College, 3-1, at Don Usher Field. The Owls are now 4-2 on the young season after the Valentine's Day split.
The same three teams will be in action on Saturday (Feb. 15). Covenant and Millsaps are set to square off at 11 a.m., followed by MUW versus Covenant at 1 p.m., and the Owls taking on Millsaps at 3 p.m.
MUW freshman hurler
Brooklyn Rhodes (2-0) had another dominating outing, this time against Covenant, as she tossed her second complete games in as many tries. Much like her first college win last weekend, Rhodes permitted just one earned run and, again, it came in the second inning. That was followed by five shut-down frames from Rhodes. Her only blemish was three walks issued, to two strikeouts.
Rhodes (2-3, RBI) helped herself with the bat, as well, in the bottom of the second. Her RBI single to right plated
Anna Sandlin with an unearned run that knotted matters at 1-1.
In the Owls third,
Emilee Slade (2-2, run) led off with a single and took second on
Riley Phillips' (0-3) ground out. Senior first baseman
Maiya Joe (1-3) then slapped a single up the middle to put MUW ahead, 2-1. The W added an insurance run in the fourth thanks to a sacrifice fly from leadoff batter
Taylor Palmer (0-3) that drove home
Lynnzie Kennedy (1-3, run) to make it the 3-1 final score.
The Owls' game two versus Millsaps saw the hosts tally first. After two scoreless frames, The W's Palmer reached on an error by the Majors' shortstop. Slade' RBI double drove home Palmer to make it 1-0 in favor of the Owls.
The lead was short-lived after Millsaps got on the board with two runs in the visitor half of the fourth. A solo run in the sixth gave the Majors some wiggle room.
Newcomer
Phallyn Clark (1-1) suffered her first loss of the season, going the complete 7.0 innings. Clark allowed seven hits to the Majors. She picked up four strikeouts and walked just one batter.
The W was limited to three total hits. Joining Slade (1-4, run) was Phillips (1-2, walk) and Ryle Grisham (1-3).
