MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Senior
Anna Sandlin ignited The W softball's offense in a non-conference doubleheader sweep at Rhodes College, 10-1 and 8-0, with both games ending after six innings by the run rule. The Owls (2-0) banged out a total of 23 hits in the pair of wins versus the Lynx (0-2).
Â
In the opener, Sandlin's bat led a 16-hit attack by MUW. Sandlin went 3-for-4, with a double, and home run. She scored three runs and had three runs batted in, as well as playing errorless defense in centerfield.
Â
Joining Sandlin with multi-hit games in the season opener were
Taylor Palmer (2-4, 2 RBI),
Riley Phillips (2-4, 2 runs),
Maiya Joe (3-4, run),
Rylie Grisham (3-3, RBI), and
Lilly Harrison (2-4, run). Palmer and Joe each slapped doubles for the Owls.
Â
MUW newcomers
Lynnzie Kennedy and
Chloe McClain each had two RBI.
Â
In the circle, another new face to The W roster –
Phallyn Clark (1-0) – earned the complete game victory for her first decision at MUW. Clark went 6.0 innings, struck out three Lynx batters and walked just one. She tossed five-consecutive shutout frames, before giving up the lone earned run in the sixth that spoiled the shutout. Clark scattered six hits, overall.
Â
In game two, Sandlin gave The W all it would need in the second inning when she blasted a two-run homer to start what would be a very big game for her. She would go 2-for-4 in the game, also cracking a double, and finished with six RBI and was the lone Owls with multiple hits in game two.
Â
That made her stat line for the doubleheader an impressive 5-for-8, two doubles, two homers, nine RBI, and four runs scored.
Â
Pitcher
Avery Byerley (1-0) kept Rhodes at bay, permitting just four hits for her 6.0 inning shutout victory. She struck out three Lynx and did not walk a batter.
Â
Joe (1-2) and
Brooklyn Rhodes (1-1) each had doubles in MUW's seven-hit attack.
Â
The same two teams will go at it again on Sunday (Feb. 9/11 a.m.), with another twinbill.
