Tennis splits with Rust

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W tennis splits its Saturday matches versus Rust College at the Garrett Courts. The Owls' men's team lost, 7-0, but the women were able to book a 5-2 win.

Versus a strong Bearcats men's lineup, MUW found itself in tough competition up and down the lineup. The young Owls roster had several good showings, despite the losses, especially at the numbers four and six singles spots that went three sets. At the No. 4 slot, Jasper Poag won his first set, 6-1, before dropping set two, 6-2, and then losing the deciding third set, 10-4.

At sixth singles, Trevor Davis had an even closer battle. Davis won a grueling 7-5 set one decision, before dropping the second set, 6-2. He then narrowly lost the third set by a 10-7 count.

On the women's side, The W ladies knew their fate before things even got rolling, with Rust able to only field two players. With the match result in hand, interim head coach Brian Merkel was able experiment with the contested matches, as his team improved to 3-3 in 2024-25.
