Game Recap: Softball |

Owls swept by Millsaps on the road

JACKSON, Miss. -  The W softball lost both ends of its non-conference doubleheader at Millsaps College. The Owls dropped the opener, 8-2, an were topped in the nightcap, 7-0, at the MC Softball Complex.

The day started on a high note for MUW, as senior shortstop Riley Phillips (1-3) homered down the leftfield line on the first pitch of the game. The W would also scores its only other run of the day – the last run scored n the game, as well – on a solo homer by Brooklyn Rhodes (1-3) in the sixth inning.

Unfortunately for the Owls, sandwiched in between were 8 runs plated by the host Majors. MC would outhit MUW by a 12-4 margin in game one. Anna Sandlin (1-2) and Lynnzie Kennedy (1-1) each had singles to account for MUW's other hits.

Rhodes, who was also the starting pitcher for The W, suffered her first collegiate loss. Rhodes (4-1) lasted 3.1 innings and was tagged for 7 earned runs and eight hits.

The second game of the day was just as frustrating for the Owls' offense. The W was limited to three hits, all singles, in the loss that dropped the squad to .500 (10-10) on the year.

Phillips (1-3), Sandlin (1-3) and Kennedy (1-2) collected MUW's hits.

Avery Byerley (2-2) took the loss, throwing the complete game. Of Millsaps 7 runs off of Byerley, just 2 were earned after a pair of Owls' errors figured in the scoring. Byerley struck out two Majors, walking one.
