Owls remain perfect in SLIAC with sweep of Eureka

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W softball remained unbeaten in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) play, thanks to its Saturday sweep of Eureka College at Don User Field. The Owls (14-10, 4-0 SLIAC) defeated the Red Devils (4-10, 0-2 SLIAC) by scores of 8-0 (in six innings) and 5-2.

After a scoreless first inning, MUW scored in every other frame in posting its sixth shutout of the 2025 season.

Phallyn Clark (4-2) went the distance in the circle to register her team-leading third shutout. Clark permitted the Red Devils just two hits in the game. She struck out six and walked just two.

Meanwhile, the Owls' offense rolled up 10 hits of their own, led by senior shortstop Riley Phillips. Phillips was 2-for-3, with 2 runs scored and an RBI double in the third inning.

Freshman designated player Brooklyn Rhodes also collected a pair of hits (2-4), scoring a run and driving in another. Chloe McClain (1-2) drove in two runs, with an RBI single n the fourth and a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch in the fifth.

Game two was a tight pitchers duel for the first four innings between Eureka's Jeri Bradford and MUW's Rhodes. Rhodes (6-1) went all 7.0 innings to tie for the team lead in complete games (at five) and also pick up her team-best sixth victory. Rhodes finished with a new collegiate-high of 9 strikeouts, while walking just one batter. She scattered seven hits and gave up just a two-run home run in the sixth inning.

Eureka's homer off of Rhodes snapped MUW's streak of shutout innings - going back to the seventh inning of Friday's game one versus Lyon College – at 19.

The W finally broke through in its half of the fourth when McClain (1-2) slapped a two-run single. In the fifth, the Owls scored a run on a Eureka throwing error and then Rhodes added an RBI single that made it 4-0, before the Red Devils responded in the top of the sixth.

A run-scoring double by catcher Emilee Slade in the sixth made it the 5-2 final.

"It was a great team win," Slade said, after handling the Owls' hurlers every inning on Saturday. "Our pitchers did an excellent job keeping their hitters in check, giving our bats the chance to come alive. We had solid defense all around and strong hitting up and down the lineup; an awesome effort by everyone."
