Softball splits Sunday matinee with Fontbonne

COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W softball split its Sunday St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) doubleheader at home versus Fontbonne University. The Owls (16-12, 6-2 SLIAC) lost a close game one, 1-0, before finding their offense in game two, 13-3, against the Griffins (6-11, 3-3 SLIAC) at Don Usher Field.

In the opener, MUW was held to a pair of singles by FBU. The W starting pitcher Phallyn Clark (4-3) allowed five hits in 4.0 innings of work. Baylee McWilliams and Avery Byerley each allowed a hit, but combined to shut out the Griffins over the final three frames.

Brooklyn Rhodes (1-3) and Chloe McClain (1-2, BB) had the MUW hits.

In game two, it was the freshman Rhodes taking care of business both with the bat and from the pitching circle. Rhodes went 2-for-2 and tied a school game record by clubbing two home runs. She finished the game with 5 runs batted in and 3 runs scored, also drawing an "unintentional, intentional walk" on four pitches in her third at-bat of the game.

Meanwhile, Rhodes scattered seven hits and permitted two earned runs over her 4.0 innings of work, improving her personal record to 7-2. Rhodes struck out two Griffins and did not walk a batter.

Rylie Grisham threw the fifth inning of the run-rule game.

The 11-hit attack by the Owls also featured a 3-for-3 game from first baseman Maiya Joe. Joe had a double and scored three times, as well.

Kaitlyn Bearley also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-2 and scoring a run. McClain was 1-for-3, with 3 RBI.
