Box Score 4 ELSAH, Ill. – Weather played havoc with The W's four-match Upper Midwest Athletic Conference (UMAC) South Division road trip – forcing matches to be moved indoors at Principia College – as The W's tennis teams found some success on their final day. MUW's men are 1-3 in the UMAC, while its ladies are 0-4 in the UMAC matches.
The Owls men's team topped Westminster, 6-1, in Friday's finale. The women – already behind the proverbial eight ball with just four players on the trip (thus starting each match in a 0-2 hole) – lost to Westminster, 2-4.
In the prior three matches, which began on Wednesday, MUW's teams were shutout – in both men's and women's play - by Webster University, Principia, and Greenville University, respectively.
Versus the Blue Jays, The W won at No. 1 doubles with the tandem of
Emma Horton and Brooklyn Ward, by a score of 6-4.
Ward also picked up her team's second point of the match by winning number two singles. Ward topped WC's Jada Barlow, 8-6, in a pro set.
On the men's side against Westminster, the Owls started the match by winning the doubles point, taking two-of-three in pairs play. MUW's wins came at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. At second doubles,
Paul Gaines and
Jaylen Lewis won, 6-4.
Jasper Poag and
Trevor Davis teamed up for a convincing, 6-1, win at third doubles.
In singles action, The W would win at the Nos. 2-6 spots. Picking up wins for the Owls at second through sixth singles, respectively, were (and their score): Luca Suggs (8-5), Lewis (8-3),
Tyler Bailey (8-6), Poag (8-0), and Davis (8-5).
Next up for the Owls will be the regular season finale on Friday, April 18 (11 a.m.) at home, versus Huntingdon College in a non-conference match. It will also be Senior Day for the MUW tennis squad.
