Going up! Owls raise Athletics departmental GPA to 3.24 for spring term

COLUMBUS, Miss. -  The W Athletics continued to push itself in the classroom, as well as on the fields of competition, as it produced a 3.24 grade point average (GPA) for the spring term as a department, with 132 awards being given on the 2025 Spring Athletic Director's Honor Roll. To make the Honor Roll, student-athletes must have a minimum 3.0 GPA for the term.

"Congratulations to each of these individuals and teams for getting it done in the classroom," MUW Director of Athletics Buddy Foster said. "As an NCAA Division III institution, academics are at the core of our existence as a department, striving for that balance between competition, classroom, and community. These academic accomplishments, coupled with our 2024-25 athletic successes and our record-setting number of hours accumulated in civic engagement, tell me we are on the right track at The W."

The Owls' department GPA is up from a 3.21 in the fall semester across its 15 intercollegiate programs (indoor & outdoor track & field are counted together). The W had a 3.22 GPA for the 2024-25 campaign.

In all, 120 unique individuals – 55 percent of MUW's total of 218 student-athletes - made the A.D.'s Honor Roll (there were a total of 12 two-sport athletes being cited among the honorees). Of those 120, a total of 84 produced a 3.50 or better GPA (71 percent of those on the A.D.'s honor Roll and 39 percent of all MUW student-athletes), nine of which were two-sport athletes.

No less than 45 individuals – 38 percent of Honor Roll designees and 21 percent of all Owls' student-athletes – had a 4.0 GPA for the spring term. Four of those achieving a 4.0 were two-sport athletes.

12 of The W's 15 programs produced team GPAs of 3.0 or better, as well. The women's tennis squad, under interim head coach Brian Merkel, and women's soccer, led by Head Coach Ana Ramos, each with a 3.68 team GPA.  That was followed by volleyball (3.61), softball (3.57), women's cross country (3.37), men's basketball (3.29), men's golf (3.29), men's cross country (3.21), men's soccer (3.15), women's golf (3.01), women's track & field (3.00), and men's tennis (3.00).
