A busy weekend for The W track & field nets 8 school record efforts

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -  It was a hectic weekend for The W's track and field teams, participating in the Samford University Open on Saturday and the KMS Invitational on Sunday, both contested at the CrossPlex. In all, there were eight school-record performances across the pair of competitions, all from the Owls' men's team.

The most intriguing of the events was the men's 60-meter hurdles, where MUW members now occupy the Nos. 2-5 spots on the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic (SLIAC) performance list. Of that quartet, three – Allen Fields (No. 2), Mikendall Morris (No. 3), and Cortland Earl (No. 4) – have also each taken a turn possessing The W school record for the event. The other, D'Marq Battle (No. 5), is new to the Owls this season.

Fields entered the 2026 season owning the 60-hurdles record. On Saturday, it was the freshman Morris that wrested the record by running a time of 8.96 seconds. But Morris was only able to enjoy his standard for 24 hours, as the junior Fields reclaimed the record in the KMS meet with his time of 8.87 seconds in the race's preliminary round (and an eventual seventh-place finish in the finals in a clocking of 9.01).

At Saturday's Samford Open, freshman Malachi Morgan highlighted the field events, posting a pair of MUW record – and SLIAC-best - efforts in the long jump and high jump. Morgan leaped 6.58 meters in the long jump and cleared 1.89 meters in the high jump.

Morgan also added his name to a third school record on Sunday with the Owls' 4x200-meter relay team. Running th lead leg, Morgan, along with teammates Bryson Moler, Earl, and Kobe Smith, hit the tape in a time of 1:33.44 minutes.

Sophomore Jarvis Sellers – last week's SLIAC track Player of the Week – lopped nearly three seconds off of the school record in the 600-meter run on Sunday, Sellers' new record was a 1:27.21 (that bested the previous best of 1:30.10 set on the same track) and earned him a sixth lace finish in the race.

The other two men's records set came in the weight throw, where James Nesby surpassed his own standard set two weeks ago on Saturday (a 9.52m), and then again on Sunday (10.27m, No. 8 in the SLIAC).

On the women's side, freshman Cassidy Talley added her name to the SLIAC leaderboard in several events, all at Saturday's Samford Open. For the 60-meter dash, Talley's time of 8.35 seconds in Saturday's prelims ranks No. 4 in the SLIAC. Her 28.80 in the 200 meters is the No. 6 time in the SLIAC., while her lead leg in the 4x400 relay – along with teammates Armoni King, Princess Loften, and Kamiyah Whiting – tops the SLIAC times, thus far.

At Sunday's KMS Invitational, King ran the No. 5 SLIAC time for the 200 meters with an effort of 28.23 seconds. Lofton and Re'Niyah Irving each joined the SLIAC's performance list in the 60-meter hurdles, as well, with Lofton's 10.24 (on Saturday) and Irving's (10.29 (on Sunday) coming in at Nos 4 and 5, respectively.

In field events, Ariella Jones marked the No. 4-best SLIAC efforts in both the triple jump (10.32m) on Saturday in the long jump (4.85m) on Sunday. In the women's shot put, Makayla Given (9.64m) and CeCe Cowan (9.51m) registered the SLIAC's fourth and fifth top marks on Saturday.
