BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The W track and field teams set a pair of school records and had numerous personal best efforts on Saturday at the Samford University Bulldog Open at the Birmingham CrossPlex. The meet was the final tune-up for the Owls' teams prior to the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) indoor track and field championships on February 27-28 in Elsah, Illinois.
Freshman
Malachi Morgan extended his own record in the men's long jump by leaping 6.89 meters at the Bulldog meet. That bettered his old mark, set nearly a month ago at the very same venue, of 6.59m. He placed fourth out of 34 competitors in the event.
Morgan's leap is also the No. 1 mark in the SLIAC for 2025-26, by four-and-one-half inches. Morgan also owns the SLIAC's best height in the men's high jump.
The other MUW record to go by the wayside was the women's 400-meter run. Sophomore
Armoni King ran a 1:03.02-minute time, besting the previous record of 1:03.48 set by
Vonisha Towns at the 2024 SLIAC championship meet.
Additionally, 12 Owls achieved personal bests in their events, ending the MUW teams into the SLIAC championships on a strong note.
