Box Score 4 COLUMBUS, Miss. - The W tennis teams played a pair of non-league matches versus Covenant College (Ga.) on Saturday and at Maryville College (Tenn.) on Sunday to cap the weekend trip. The Owls women's team lost both bouts, while the men's squad went 1-1.
MUW's ladies fell by identical 7-0 scores in both matches. Versus Covenant, the No. 2 doubles team of
Austin Hays and
Bailey Flynn won by a decisive 6-0 count. But the Scots won the other two matches to take the doubles point, as well as sweeping the six singles contests in straight sets. On Sunday, Maryville took all nine matches of doubles and singles, for the win.
In the men's action against Covenant on Saturday, The W's lone team point came from doubles, by winning the Nos. 1 and 3 matches. At No. 1 pairs,
Jorge Ortiz and
Sandro Giangregorio won by a 6-4 score. That was followed by the third doubles duo of
Josh Cooper and
Alvaro Bardales took a 6-3 victory.
In singles, the Scots won all six matches, five in straight sets. Bardales, at fifth singles, split sets after losing set one, 6-4, won the second, 6-4, before losing the third set, 10-4.
But The W came back strong on Sunday with a hotly-contested, 4-3, win versus Maryville (played at the University of Tennessee indoor courts). Maryville earned the doubles point by winning two of three contests, with MUW taking second doubles with
Juan Garcia and
Marcos Fernandez, 7-6 (7-5), winners.
Switching over to singles, MC went up 2-0, with a win at No. 2. But MUW would reel off four-consecutive wins, all in straight sets, as the matches finished. Next off was Ortiz at No. 1 (6-3, 7-6), Giangregorio at No. 3 (6-2, 6-4), and Garcia at No. 4 (7-5, 6-4), to put the Owls ahead, 3-2.
With fifth singles splitting sets, the match-clinching win fell to No. 6 singles. It was Fernandez posting the 6-3, 7-5, win to give MUW its fourth team point and improve the squad's record to 4-3 (4-1 in the spring portion of the 2025-26 season).
The W teams will next host Huntingdon College on Saturday (Feb. 28) at the Garrett Courts.
