JACKSON, Miss. – The W tennis teams both took a loss at Millsaps College in a Sunday matinee match. The Owls' men's team lost a 4-3 decision, while the women's squad was blanked by the Majors, 7-0.
In the men's match, Millsaps secured the doubles point over the Owls, but not without some effort. The Majors won third doubles, but MUW's tandem of
Jorge Ortiz and
Juan Garcia improved to 2-0 with a 6-2 wi at first doubles. At No. 2 doubles, The W's
Josh Cooper and
Alvaro Bardales battled strong, before falling, 7-5.
The two teams split the six singles matches. MC won the Nos. 1-3 matches, with the Owls grabbing Nos. 4-6.
Marcos Fernandez and Ortiz won at five (6-1, 6-0) and six (6-0, 6-2), respectively.
Bardales found himself in another tough match at the No. 4 spot, splitting sets. Bardales lost set one, 6-4, and then won set two by that same score. In the deciding set three, Bardales took a 10-6 win.
A strong Majors lineup dominated the women's singles matches, winning all six in straight sets over MUW's ladies.
The W also dropped all three doubles matches, but made Millsaps work harder for the wins, especially at the Nos. 2 and 3 pairs slots. At second doubles,
Alaina Mathis and
Kayleigh Griffin lost a tough, 7-5, match, with
Emma Horton and
Harley Lowry falling at third doubles, 6-4.
