Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W tennis split its matches versus the University of the Ozarks on Friday evening at the Magnolia Tennis Center. The Owl women (3-6) won by a 4-3 score over the Eagles, while MUW's men (5-5) dropped their match to UO by a 4-3 count.
The W ladies got their match off to a fast start by sweeping all three doubles contests to take the team doubles point. At No. 1 pairs, it was
Austin Hays and
Bailey Flynn winning, 6-1. That was followed by victories at No. 2 by
Alaina Mathis and
Kayleigh Griffin, 6-3, and
Emma Horton and
Harley Lowry at third doubles, 7-5.
Five of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets, with the Eagles taking three of those to tie up the overall team score at 3-3. The two Owl wins in those bouts came from Flynn at No. 3 (6-3, 6-3) and Horton at No. 5 (6-2, 6-0).
That left the match result in the hands of the No. 2 singles match, where Griffin was battling Ozarks' Brooke Humphrey. Humphrey won the first set, 6-1, with Griffin striking back in set two, 6-3, to level their match. In the deciding third set, it was Griffin who emerged as a 10-7 victor and put the team win in the Owls' column.
The MUW men also began by winning the doubles point, taking wins at No. 2 doubles from
Juan Garcia and
Marcos Fernandez (6-3), along with No. 3 doubles from
Josh Cooper and
Alvaro Bardales (7-5).
The Owls and Eagles split sets in three of the six singles contests, two of which went the visitors' way. Only at No. 1 singles did MUW win an elongated match.
Jorge Ortiz dropped the first set to Haru Satamuro, 7-5, but bounced back to even the match with a 6-4 set two win. Ortiz then dispatched of his Eagle' foe by winning the deciding third set, 10-6.
Unfortunately for The W, it only found a win in one of the other three singles contests decided in straight sets, as well. Bardales, at six singles, was a 6-2, 6-3 winner for MUW's other team point.
