Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Miss. – The W tennis split its non-conference matches at home versus Blue Mountain Christian University on Wednesday at the Garrett Courts. The Owls men's squad (8-6) topped the Toppers (2-13) by a score of 6-1, while the MUW women's tram (4-9) lost to BMCU (6-8) by a 7-0 score.
The W men won for the second-consecutive match, and third in its last four outings, with its win. The Owls took two of three doubles matches to earn the first team point, and then won five of six singles bouts. Winning at doubles for the Owls were the No. 2 duo of
Juan Garcia and
Marcos Fernandez, a 6-3 score, and No. 3 partners,
Alvaro Bardales and
Josh Cooper, 6-2 victors.
In singles, four of MUW's five wins came in straight sets. At the No. 1 position,
Jorge Ortiz Catala won by a 6-1, 6-4 tally, improving his personal record to 7-2 on the season. At No. 2 singles, Cooper split sets – losing 1-6, and winning set two 6-4 – before losing an elongated third set, 11-9.

ttle at No 4 singles, 6-2, 2-6, 11-9. Fernandez (6-2, 6-4) and Bardales (6-0, 6-0) won convincingly at the Nos. 5 and 6 positions, respectively.
The MUW ladies ran into a buzz saw versus the BMCU women, dropping all six singles bouts in straight sets and managing to take just nine total games.
At No 1 singles,
Austin Hays was responsible for five of those games. Hays lost her first set, 6-1, but battled gamely in the second, before succumbing, 6-4.
The Toppers won all three women's doubles bouts, as well.
The W will next be in action on Friday (April 10) morning at 10 a.m. versus Belhaven University, in another non-league match-up at the Garrett Courts.
