COLUMBUS, Miss. - It may be early in the 2026-27 campaign, but The W men's tennis is sending a message that it may be a force with which to be reckoned. On Saturday, the Owls (3-0) remained unbeaten by dispatching of NCAA Division I foe Mississippi Valley State University, 4-3 at the Garrett Courts, followed by a 5-2 win over NCAA III opponent Huntingdon College at the Magnolia Tennis Center.
Versus MVSU, the doubles point proved to be the difference, as the Owls and Delta Devils split the singles matches, 3-3. And the key win for MUW came at No. 1 doubles, where the tandem of
David Gimenez and
Luis Oliva scored a win over MVSU's Julien Cordero and Juan Alejandro Rozo, 6-4, to set the pace.
After rain showers moved the Huntingdon match over to Magnolia Tennis Center, MUW dispatched of the Hawks for the second-consecutive meeting between the schools. Prior to that, the Owls had lost all 10 of the previous bouts versus the Hawks in the series' history.
The W began the HC match by sweeping all three doubles contests. At No. 1 doubles, it was
Jorge Catala Ortiz and
Alvaro Bardales winning 6-4. That was followed by No. 2 doubles pair
Sandro Giangregorio and
Alvaro Alonso winning, 6-2, and No. 3 tandem of
Juan Garcia and
Manan Kumar dominating, 6-1.
The Owls then picked up our straight-set win at the Nos. 2, 3, 4, and 6 singles slots for the 5-1 final score. At second singles, Kumar won 6-2, 7-6 (7-1), followed by Giangregorio at No. 3 singles with a 6-4, 6-3 victory.
At fourth singles, Garcia rolled to a 6-0, 6-3 win. At the No. 6 position, MUW newcomer
Martin Gamonal easily won, as well, 6-2, 6-4.
