COLUMBUS, Miss. – The recent rash of injuries that has befallen the women's soccer team for the Mississippi University for Women finally caught up with the squad over the weekend, particularly in Sunday's 9-0 loss at home versus the University of Dallas.
The Owls (4-7) were down six frontline players, among them their starting goalkeeper (
Sarah Gilliland). MUW Head Coach
Catie Lyles was left with just three substitutes for the team's pair of weekend matches, a tall order versus quality teams.
On Sunday versus the Crusaders (6-3), The W was out-shot by a 28-1 margin, as UD dominated the ball and field position.
The W goalie tandem of starter
Caitlyn Fox and
Haven Tuggle combined for 16 saves, the most in a single match by the Owls in 2021. Fox had seven saves in 55 minutes and Tuggle registered nine saves in just 35 minutes.
Hannah Helms had MUW's lone shot, which was on-goal in the first half and saved by the Crusaders.
The W will next be in action on Tuesday (Oct. 12) at Blue Mountain College. Kickoff in Blue Mountain, Miss., is slated for 1 p.m.
