COLUMBUS, Miss. – The Mississippi University for Women and LaGrange College men's soccer teams battled evenly, but for single defensive lapse by The W, in a 1-0 home loss. The Owls dropped to 6-7 on the year, while the Panthers improved to 6-4.
A docile first half had the two teams knotted at 0-0 after the first 45 minutes. Each team had one shot-on-goal, which was saved by the other. In the second stanza, the Panthers got a possession in the attacking third and the guests slipped the ball past MUW goalie
David McCutchen in the 54th minute for what would be the deciding tally.
McCutchen would finish the afternoon with four saves.
The Owls kept the pressure on the rest of the way, however, putting four shots on-frame. In all, The W had 10 shot attempts in the second half. Each team finished the match with identical totals of 14 total shots and five shots on-goal. LC had one more corner kick than did the Owls, 6-5.
Freshman
Vini Lopes took five shot tries, with to on-goal to lead The W attack.
Stephon Walker and
Paulo Carneiro each had three attempts, as well. Two of Carneiro's shots were saved, while Walker had one SOG.
The Owls will next travel to Talladega College on Tuesday (Oct. 19) for a 5 p.m. match.
