Owls unable to scale Crowley’s Ridge

Box Score PARAGOULD, Ark. – A slow start proved to be a hurdle that the Mississippi University for Women women's basketball could not overcome in an 82-53 road loss at Crowley's Ridge College.  The Owls fell to 0-3 overall, while the Pioneers improved to 4-3.

The W found itself in a hole early, trailing 23-6 after the first quarter, thanks in large part to a lackluster 2-for-18 shot percentage from the field to open the game. MUW trailed at the intermission, 47-23.

In the third period, The W cut into the Pioneers' cushion, outscoring the hosts 19-13 in the segment and trailing by 18 points (60-42) – after shooting 43 percent from the floor - going into the final period. Despite a fairly even fourth quarter to start with, CRC was able to expand its final margin of victory with both teams emptying their benches in the waning minutes.

Junior forward MG Chamberlain led the Owls with 15 points. Chamberlain made good on 7-of-18 field goal tries in her 33 minutes on the floor. She also had four rebounds and a blocked shot.

Senior Rokila Wallace – a Columbus native – had a double-double game with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Wallace overcame a tough night shooting from the floor, thanks to a 10-for-13 effort at the charity stripe. Her all-around solid numbers for the game included five assists and three steals, both team-high totals for The W, as well.

Maddie Guerin, making her first start for the Owls, had nine points and seven rebounds (all on the defensive glass). Like Wallace, Christiana Harris had a balanced night with eight points, five boards and four assists.

While starter Hannah Duran was held scoreless, the freshman found other ways to contribute by grabbing six rebounds and blocking four Pioneer shots.

The W's bench was out-scored by CRC's reserves, 32-7.

The W will next play in the Millsaps Tournament this weekend in Jackson, Miss. MUW takes on Birmingham-Southern on Saturday (Nov. 20) at 11 a.m. in the Hanger Dome, before facing host – and NCAA III No. 25-ranked - Millsaps on Sunday at 1 p.m.
