SEWANEE, Tenn. – The Mississippi University for Women men's basketball squad continued its early-season struggles in its final game of the Lou Varnell Classic. The Owls (0-5) were defeated by Birmingham-Southern College, 99-60, at Juhan Gym.
While both teams made the most of the inside game – the Panthers held a 44-32 advantage in the paint. The most glaring differential was that of bench scoring, where The W reserves were bested by B-SC's, 69-33. The Owls were outdone in second-chance points (17-7) and fast break points (20-10) by the B-SC.
While the Owls scored the game's first basket, Birmingham-Southern took the lead for good at the 16:36 mark of the opening period. MUW shot a creditable 42 percent in the first half, only to see the Panthers connect on nearly 54 percent of its shots. The W would finish the game at 37 percent (26-71), while B-SC hit for 49 percent (39-80).
Terry Coleman Jr. would lead the Owls offense with 14 points. Coleman Jr. was 6-of-11 from the floor and pulled down three rebounds.
A trio of The W players –
Ddallen Bailey,
Quintiyus Causey and
Shon Wright all tallied in double digits with 11 points, apiece. Bailey also led the Owls with five rebounds and had two assists, as well as blocking one shot.
Causey dished off three assists and Wright grabbed three rebounds.
Milos Zeradjanin was held to five points, but had a game-leading five assists.
Kenterrius Davison added four points, with
Davon Kennick and
Dariun Doss with two each, as the only other Owls' players to score.
The W will next host Centenary College on Tuesday (Nov. 23) in its final contest before the Thanksgiving break. Tipoff at Pohl Gym will be 2 p.m.
