Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Owls unable to change Lane in dropping season series

JACKSON, Tenn. – To quote that great distorter of all things linguistic - Yogi Berra – it was "like deja vu all over again" for the Mississippi University for Women volleyball team in its rematch with Lane College. Just like the first meeting between the Owls and Dragons in Columbus on October 4, on LC's home floor, before dropping three-straight close sets and, subsequently, the match.

The W won the opening set, 25-21, before losing by scores of 20-25, 20-25, 18-25 in its final road contest of 2021.

In the opening set, the first 13 points alone resulted in five ties. A six-point run by Lane gave the hosts an 11-8 lead. Down 17-15, the Owls got the side-out. Llayne Skinner then served on five-consecutive winning points, 21-17, and MUW closed out the set win.

MUW never led in the second set, despite staying close. Set three saw the teams knotted at 19-19 and The W within one at 20-21, before the Dragons tallied the final four points.

In the fourth set, The W was down 13-14 when Lane reeled off six unanswered points to create separation.

The Owls' attack was led by the tandem of Maggie Griggs and Llayne Skinner, who each had 11 kills. Skinner had a .219 attack average to go along with three aces and 15 digs.

Jasmine Kelly added eight kills and a team-best three blocks. Hannah Duran had a nice line of six kills, 18 assists, seven digs and a match-high five aces to her credit. Camryn Johnson contributed 17 assists.

Madison Suggs anchored the back row with 23 digs.

The W will close out the season on Friday (Nov. 5) evening at home versus Dillard University. Match time is slated for 6 p.m. in Pohl Gym and Senior Day festivities – honoring DeAnna King and Harleigh Kelly – will take place prior to the start of the match.
