MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Mississippi University for Women received great contributions from both
Thomas Wright and
Shon Wright (no relation), but it was not enough to get The W men's basketball team over the hump in an 85-78 loss at Huntingdon College. It was the second time in a little over a month that the Owls (1-10) had played the host Hawks (5-7) tough on their own floor (also falling 62-54 back on November 13).
Thomas Wright had his best game since joining the Owls roster two weeks ago, tallying 18 points off the bench. He connected on 9-of-11 shot attempts, an impressive 82 percent shooting, and pulled down six rebounds. He has scored in double figures all four games played.
Shon Wright, who started the contest, finished with a game-leading – and season-best - 15 rebounds versus the Hawks. He converted 3-of-6 from the field and also scored eight points and dished off four assists.
For the fifth time in as many games played, senior – and Columbus native –
Terryonte Thomas finished in double-digit scoring. Thomas booked 17 points, going 5-for-14 from the floor and converting 7-of-10 free throws. Thomas also rounded up eight rebounds, helping The W out-board Huntingdon as a team, 40-33.
While the final result may not have gone MUW's way, it was one of three squad's more balanced efforts with nine players scoring, seven of those with six or more points.
Milos Zeradjanin and
Quintiyus Causey each contributed nine points. Zeradjanin had six assists for the second-consecutive game, topping all players in the game for "helps."
Trey Jackson and
Ddallen Bailey had seven and six points, respectively. Jackson contributed four rebounds and a pair of steals, while Bailey grabbed three caroms. Three points from
Clay Blanton and a free throw from
Tanner Collins capped MUW's scoring.
Both clubs struggled shooting in the early going, with the Owls at 26 percent and the Hawks 36 percent. The W heated up in the second half to finish at 42 percent (30-71) for the game, while Huntingdon ended the day at 44 percent (28-63).
The Owls will next play at Birmingham-Southern College on Sunday (Dec. 19) at 3 p.m.
