Softball Sweeps Day Two of Home Tournament

Wrapping up day two of tournament play, Owls softball gathered themselves to sweep Westminster College with back-to-back wins.

Game 1 (W, 11-6)

Starting in the circle for the Owls was Amelia Stalter. The Junior from Atlantic Beach, Fl put in 4 innings of work, allowing 6 runs on 5 hits, with 3 walks and 2 strikeouts. This is Stalter's first win on the season and Kaitlyn Parrish's first save. Parrish came in and held the Bluejays to their 6 runs, only allowing 1 hit and 2 strikeouts, in 3 innings.

Offensively, the Owls were finally able to string together consecutive hits to score in every inning except the 5th. Iyana Canada, a Sophomore, went 3 for 4 with a triple, two singles, three RBIs, and a stolen base. Austyn Holden, a Senior, went 2 for 3 with a double, a single, and 2 RBIs.

Game 2 (W, 7-6)

Kaitlyn Parrish started Game 2 in the circle, but after a handful of fielding errors, Mackenzie Denton came in to relieve Parrish after 1.2 innings. Denton pitched for 5.1 innings, allowing 1 run off of 3 hits, with no walks and 4 strikeouts. All-in-all, it was a good day in the circle for Owls pitchers.

Game 2 was a slow start offensively for the Owls, remaining scoreless until the bottom of the 3rd. The real action for the Owls started in the bottom of the 5th when they scored 6 of their 7 runs. First, the Owls scored off a throwing error by the shortstop, and then again, on J. Palmer walking in a run. Miranda Nash opened things up for the Owls with a double up the middle, clearing the bases, and tying the ballgame. The winning run for the Owls came in the fifth inning as well, when Katie Beth Williams reached home on a bad throw by the catcher, attempting to get her out at third.

Owls softball will return to action Sunday, March 7, when they take on Rio Grande University in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The first pitch is scheduled for 11 AM EST.
