Game Recap: Softball |

Denton's RBIs, Holden's Hits Earn Split with Talladega

COLUMBUS, Miss. – After cancellations and postponements due to weather, Owls softball broke its two-week hiatus with a doubleheader against Talladega College on Friday, March 26 at Don Usher Field. The W struggled to find hits in game one but ran up the score in game two to split the day versus the Tornadoes.

Game One L,5-4

Spending most of game one in the circle, Mackenzie Denton falls to 4-6 on the season. The senior from Pontotoc, Miss., played 7.0 innings for six hits against, five earned runs, and 10 strikeouts.

The first three innings of the game came and went with no runs scored. In the top of the fourth, Talladega scored its first run. The Owls answered in the bottom of the inning with two runs of their own.

In the fifth, the Tornadoes added four more to seal their victory. The Owls attempted to rally back in the bottom of the fifth, but the two runs scored were not enough to defeat Talladega.

Austyn Holden led The W offense with three at-bats, one hit (a double), one run, and one RBI.

Other standout Owls were Iyana Canada, Jessica Deming, and Mackenzie Denton with one RBI each and Lauren Duckworth, Marley Poole, and Denton with one run each.

Game Two W, 8-2

Grabbing her fifth win of the season, Kaitlyn Parrish pitched the entire game to record eight hits against, two runs (one earned), and five strikeouts.

The Owls scored first in game two with two runs in the bottom of the first and two in the second to lead the Tornadoes 4-0.

Talladega scored its first run in the third and an additional run in the fifth, but it was not enough to give the Tornadoes a second victory.

Still in the lead, The W added a fifth run in the third and its final three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

Holden was at the top of the Owls offense again in game two with a 1-for-2 appearance for three runs. Megan Cummins led the team in RBIs with two, while Canada, Duckworth, and Morgan Gresham had one each.

The Owls will be back in action on Friday, April 2, when they travel to Stillman College. The first pitch of the doubleheader is set for 3 p.m.
