CLEVELAND, Miss. - The Mississippi University for Women men's soccer squad was shutout for the first time this season, falling on the road to NCAA Division II foe Delta State University, 3-0, in the first-ever meeting between the teams. The loss dropped the Owls to 2-2 on the year, while the Statesmen improved to 2-1-1 on a rainy Delta Field.
The two teams battled to a scoreless tie through the first 42-plus minutes, until DSU tallied in the 43rd minute, and took the 1-0 advantage into the intermission.
The Statesmen added goals in the 73rd and 77th minutes for the final 3-0 margin.
The W put 2-of-7 shots on frame to make things interesting, but both were saved. Conversely, MUW goalie
David McCutchen had four saves in his 90 minutes of work.
Kai VanCourt and
Pedro Santana each had a pair of shot attempts for the Owls. VanCourt and
Vini Lopes had one shot on-goal.
The W men will next be in action at home versus Williams Baptist College this Friday (Sept. 17). Kickoff for the match is slated for 5 p.m. at the Columbus Soccer Complex.
