Box Score 2 ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The Mississippi University for Women soccer teams traveled to Warren Wilson College for a men's-women's doubleheader on Saturday morning. With the unique contest of the Owls versus the Owls, it was the MUW men forging a 1-1 tie and its women taking a 3-1 win.
For The W men (4-6-3), it extended the team's unbeaten streak to four matches, just one shy of matching the program record.
MUW got its goal midway through the opening half off the foot of junior forward
Tres Ray.
Joseph Cumberland sent a nice through ball to Ray that opened up the WWC defense and led to the goal.
It was Ray's second goal as a member of The W's squad and held up until the second half, when WWC netted the equalizer and the 1-1 score stood the rest of the match.
"We started the game well and controlled the first half with our possession, MUW Head Coach
BJ Pheasant said. "We only capitalized on one of our opportunities. Unfortunately, we paid for not taking advantage of our quality first half and scoring more. We lost concentration in the second half and allowed a tying goal. We will look to continue to improve going forward."
The W women's team won for the third time in its last four outings. Ranked No. 3 in each of the United States Collegiate Athletic Association coaches poll, MUW found itself tied, 1-1, at the half before tallying a pair of unanswered goals in the second stanza to improve to 6-5-1.
Senior USCAA All-American
Shelby Harrington netted The W's first half score. In the final 45 minutes, it was goals by English import
Mickie Palfreman and Caledonia product
Lizzie Truelock that provided the winning margin.
For the junior Palfreman, it was her second goal at The W. Trulock's tally gave her four goals and tied her for second on the MUW side.
"The first half we struggled to play our style of soccer," MUW Women's Head Coach
Catie Lyles said. "The girls came back in the second half and played much better and were able to finish the game with a win."
