Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Owls ambushed by Piedmont, 2-1

COLUMBUS, Miss. – After suffering just one loss in its last six matches, the Mississippi University for Women men's soccer team came out on the wrong end of a 2-1 decision versus Piedmont University, on its "Senior Day" at the Lowndes County Soccer Complex. The Owls fell to 5-8-3, while the Lions upped their record to 3-8-5.

The W program paid tribute to its six seniors – Joao Schroeder, Luis Santos, Pedro Santana, Aussie Salgado, Terrell Johnson, and Jacob Vickers – who are capping their careers in 2022, during a pre-game ceremony.

MUW held the first-half lead, 1-0, after a foul in the box gave the Owls a penalty kick in the 14th minute. The W Head Coach BJ Pheasant called on Alejandro Pocasangre to take the penalty kick, which he slid past Piedmont goalkeeper Colin Sheeler. That score stood for the balance of the half and five minutes into the second stanza.

In the 51st minute, it was the Owls whistled for a foul in the box to give Piedmont a penalty kick of its own. The Lions' Jason Aussin beat The W net-minder David McCutchen to knot the contest at 1-1.

In the 75th minute, Aussin got a rebound of a loose ball - after a nice save by McCutchen – and drilled the ball inside the far post for what would prove to be the deciding tally. An MUW roster depleted by injury and illness, could not muster much of an attack in the second half and was out-shot 12-3 (and by a 17-9 margin for the match).

MUW'S Miguel Hernandez and Salgado each had a pair of shot attempts and each sent one shot on-frame.

McCutchen finished the day with seven quality saves, turning away every try that wasn't a result of a penalty.
.
The W will close out the 2022 season at home on Wednesday (Oct. 26) versus Tougaloo College. Kickoff at the LCSC is slated for 4 p.m.
