JACKSON, Tenn. - The last time Mississippi University for Women faced Lane College in Columbus back on September 11, The W won a thrilling five-set match. However, on the road, the Owls (7-15) had their script flipped by the NCAA Division II Dragons (24-14), 3-0, losing by set scores of 25-20, 25-10, 25-19.
The first set saw The W pull ahead 9-4 before being caught and overtaken by Lane. Being down 2-3 points most of the set, the Owls tied the Dragons at 17-17 on a
Micaela Hudgins kill. LC closed out the set on an 8-3 run.
Much like set one, the second set started off promising for The W, leading 4-2 with
Jasmine Kelly serving. The Dragons would go on a 5-0 run to take the lead they would not relinquish, 25-10.
Set three stayed relatively close early on. The W led, 7-5, on a
Llayne Skinner kill. MUW was still within one point, 15-16, after a kill by
Amonie Silas capped a long side-out rally. But Lane out-scored the Owls, 9-4 the rest of the way, winning both the set and match in the process.
LC was able to separate from MUW with a .333 attack average, compared to .072 by the visitors. The W serve game was off, as well. Averaging 1.7 aces per set, MUW had two total for the three-set contest.
The Owls' attack was paced by Skinner's seven kills. Kelly finished with four kills, while Hudgins and Silas had three, apiece.
Former Caledonia High School product
Maddy Suggs' eight digs led the back row. Silas had a pair of blocks up front.
Hannah Duran had seven assists.
The W will have a week off before traveling to Tougaloo College on October 31.
